Antonis Kastrissianakis

From 1981 to 2018 Antonis Kastrissianakis was a European Union (EU) official serving in the European Commission.

In 2007, he became Director in the Directorate General for Taxation and Customs Union (DG TAXUD). He was responsible for customs reforms in the EU to deliver secure trade and consumer protection, uphold intellectual property rights, and promote trade facilitation. He was also responsible for EU international relations in the customs area overseeing the negotiation and implementation of relevant provisions in EU customs and trade agreements including rules of origin.

He led the EU side in the negotiation of customs chapters in the EU-Canada Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), in the EU-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) and in the aborted EU-U.S. Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP). He handled EU customs relations and agreements with other main partners such as China, Russia, Switzerland, Turkey, and Morocco. He represented the EU in meetings of senior officials in international bodies including the World Customs Organization (WCO).

From 2001 to 2006, Antonis Kastrissianakis was Director for coordinating EU Member States employment policies. Prior to this, he held numerous managerial and other positions in relation to the design and implementation of EU regional, urban and social policies and support programs and to EU development cooperation. He also served in the Cabinet of the EU Commissioner for Regional Policy and participated in the European Commission Task Force for Administrative Reform.

From 1979 to 1981, Antonis Kastrissianakis was Assistant in the European Economic Studies section of the College of Europe, Bruges, Belgium, where he also lectured on European Regional Policy for several years.

He read Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE) at Oxford University in the early 1970s, European Economic Studies at the College of Europe in Bruges in the late 1970s, and studied Law at the University of Athens in between. Before university, he went to school in Athens and at the United World College of the Atlantic in South Wales.

From 1976 to 1978 he served in the Greek Navy.
